Recently, the co-founder of MEDCOMPASS and healthcare organizer Ekaterina Alekseevna Kobyakova returned from her trip to Africa, where she visited medical facilities in Sierra Leone. During her visit, she managed to tour three government hospitals, each of which provided her with a unique perspective on the healthcare system in the region; she also met with the chief radiologist of Sierra Leone, Dr. Kosia.
The first hospital on the itinerary was the esteemed Connaught Hospital, known as the main referral hospital in Sierra Leone. Dr. M.I. Kapuwa, the hospital manager, warmly welcomed Ekaterina and provided insight into the hospital’s operations.
Next on the list was the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH). In all the hospitals that Ekaterina visited, there were specialized departments for gynecology and obstetrics, indicating a high demand for maternal and child health services in Africa, where an average family has between 10 and 15 children. The visit to PCMH shed light on the specialized care provided to women in need.
Ekaterina also visited the government hospital Rokupa under the leadership of Dr. Mohamed Kamara. During the tour of the hospitals she visited various departments, including gynecology, postnatal care, and intensive care units, emphasizing the commitment to quality healthcare delivery.
The final part of the journey led to the Ministry of Health, where Ekaterina met with Dr. Sartie Kanneh, the chief medical officer. This meeting provided a deeper understanding of the healthcare landscape and the challenges faced in ensuring public health.
This journey provided many valuable insights into medical practice in Sierra Leone, emphasizing the importance of compassionate care and community support for the effective delivery of healthcare services. Ekaterina Alekseevna became the first Russian doctor to visit Sierra Leone.
